- The MH&RF was formed in 1991 and founded by local citizens and veterans to honor the 73 Michigan men listed as POW-MIA’s in Vietnam and more than 467 law enforcement officers from Michigan killed in the line of duty, as well as other Michigan heroes.
- In 1995, Representative Allen Lowe, along with the Clearwater Township Board, helped the Michigan Heritage & Research Foundation acquire 80 acres of pristine land overlooking Lake Skegemog, west of Kalkaska, off of M-72
- A site plan was drawn up by R. Clark Associates, Inc. of Traverse City, Michigan. The plan shows the main road, walking trails, building locations and locations for a log chapel with both buildings overlooking Like Skegemog.
- Since 1995, the Heritage Foundation has cleared a road on the property to make way for our most recent plans of clearing a one mile ADA approved walking trail and building a log chapel.
- In 2004 the MH&RF was successful in bringing the Vietnam Memorial Moving Wall to Kalkaska and bringing in more than 15,00 visitors representing thirteen countries! This week-long event made a tremendous impact on the economy of Kalkaska and provided positive and encouraging news coverage throughout Michigan. This event was made possible with the help of over 500 local volunteers.
- Most recently in 2006, the MH&RF established a new Board of Directors, printed updated brochures, updated our website, redesigned “Membership Coins” and has actively attended county and township meetings regaining favor and support for our vision.
